Welcome to Bass Coast!
The protected waters of Anderson Inlet make the coastal town of Inverloch a favourite holiday spot. Swimmers, water sports enthusiasts and surfers flock to the beaches during warmer months, while the surrounding walks and drives make the village a popular year-round destination.
Try a new water sport or practice your favourite one at Inverloch's pristine beaches. The still waters of Anderson Inlet make wakeboarding or windsurfing a breeze, while the surf beach is a great spot to introduce children (or beginners) to surfing. Try Eagles Nest if you are a confident surfer. Charter a boat or take a cruise to enjoy Inverloch from the water.
Explore the many boardwalks and coastal trails to discover the town's beautiful natural surroundings. Wander down the kid-friendly Screw Creek Nature Walk to explore the marshlands, which lead to gorgeous views of Anderson Inlet. For a bit of fresh sea air, stroll along the cliffs of the George Bass Coastal Walk or get the legs pumping on Victoria's only coastal rail trail, the Bass Coast Rail Trail.
The only coastal rail trail in Victoria travels through a magnificent range of scenery. Starting at Anderson, a gradual descent through farmland leads to the coast with its roaring surf, sandy beaches and views of Bass Strait. Cross the iconic trestle bridge at Kilcunda and continue over the Powlett River through open farmland, enjoying a clear view of wind farm turbines. Pass by remnants of the coal mining days and wetlands, before finishing at Wonthaggi.
Inverloch is also a perfect stopover point for those driving from Phillip Island and continuing on to Wilsons Promontory. Enjoy the spectacular views of Bass Strait from the cliff tops along the 12-kilometre Bunurong Coastal Drive between Inverloch and Cape Paterson. The drive passes many natural attractions ready to explore, such as Eagles Nest, Twin Reefs, Shack Bay, The Caves and Flat Rocks. Or journey between two of Victoria's most loved tourist attractions - the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory National Park at the southernmost tip of mainland Australia.
You'll uncover much more than these two major sights as you wind your way through south Gippsland on this 200-kilometre drive. Detour along the Bunurong Coastal Drive for sweeping ocean views and unique rocky outcrops, wander along almost deserted rugged beaches, cast a line for a fish supper, or enjoy a counter meal in a typical country pub before you reach the breathtakingly spectacular Wilsons Prom.
But whatever else you choose to do, bring the family on a visit to beautiful Anderson Inlet, a protected bay where the Tarwin River enters Bass Strait. The enclosed bay makes Anderson Inlet a protected beach, perfect for swimming with the kids, while the shallow estuary creates a stunning turquoise colour. Take a wander along the large expanse of soft sand and watch the breeze coming over the low grassy dunes. At low tide you can stroll around the western headland to reach the surfing beaches.
Fishing opportunities abound. Bait your hook and cast your beach fishing rod to land some King George whiting, Australian salmon, mullet and silver trevally. Anderson Inlet is also a great recreational boating area with a boat ramp jetty.
There is so much to do and see in Victoria's beautiful Bass Coast region, that you will inevitably run out of time to cover them all! Maybe you'll just have to come back next year...
